When Le Clézio was announced as the 2008 Nobel laureate in literature, there were many questioning glances and raised eyebrows. Practically unknown in the English speaking world, he has, however, been celebrated in France since his first prize-winning novel was published in 1963. With over 40 novels, essays, collections of short stories and translations to his name, Le Clézio’s work has attracted both critical acclaim and popular attention. But who is Le Clézio and why was he chosen by the Swedish Academy for this prestigious prize? Jacqueline Dutton will present an overview of Le Clézio’s life and work to reveal what makes him the ideal choice for the Nobel laureate in literature. Drawing on her interviews with the author and studies of his work, she will explain how Le Clézio’s extensive travels and experiences of other cultures influence and shape his essentially humanist vision of the world. AF Gallery 6.30-8.30pm. All welcome, free entry.

| "Bons Mots" - French literature in the time of Monet |
| |
Actors Mary Haire, Andrew MacFarlane and Judy Nunn give voice to some of the world's best loved classics including Les Miserables, Carmen, Camille, Madame Bovary and Cyrano de Bergerac.
Other authors on the programme include Collette, Zola, Proust and “the father of the short story”, Guy de Maupassant.
The narrators will pay tribute to this writing that helped inspire the revolutionary painters and sculptors of late 19th and early 20th century France.
Bons Mots - French literature in the time of Monet offers a unique opportunity to hear a melange of French literature set against the background of Monet and his contemporaries’ rendering of the France of their day.
Bons Mots (presented in English) is a literary adjunct to the Art Gallery’s current major exhibition Monet and the Impressionists. Bookings and enquiries: (02) 9225 1878. Art Gallery of NSW, Domain Theatre, Lower Level 3. Monday, 24 November 2008 from 6pm to 8pm.
